Study of clinical validity and
publication in international journal for prediction of SMI (skeletal maturity
indicators) stage for orthodontics using artificial intelligence bone age
solution.
Crescom, an artificial
intelligence medical image analysis company led by CEO Jae Joon Lee, announced that the results of
clinical validation for MediAI-BA's SMI stage prediction have been published in
Scientific Reports, a related publication of the world-renowned journal,
Nature. MediAI-BA is a hybrid artificial intelligence solution for growth plate
analysis that combines the strengths of existing bone age reading techniques,
namely GP and TW3, while addressing their weaknesses.
The Skeletal Maturation Indicators (SMI) are widely used in
orthodontics to classify bone maturation. They analyze the hands and wrist
bones to determine 11 stages of growth, including the gentle growth period, the
rapid growth period, and the end of growth. It is widely acknowledged that
establishing an appropriate orthodontic treatment plan based on a child's
growth and developmental stage, is crucial.
In this study conducted by Professor Seong Hwan Choi's team
at Yonsei University College of Dentistry in collaboration with a renowned
orthodontist, the MediAI-BA's SMI prediction demonstrated clinically reliable
performance and improved clinical efficiency in orthodontics. Furthermore, it
has been confirmed that this can assist clinicians in improving the
reproducibility of skeletal maturation assessments.
In addition to MediAI-BA, Crescom offers MediAI-OA, a
quantitative evaluation solution for assessing the severity of knee
osteoarthritis. This solution is currently being used review support tool for
the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Furthermore, the software
offers specialized solutions for musculoskeletal disorders, including an
artificial intelligence analysis solution for ankylosing spondylitis. This
groundbreaking solution was published in an international journal, marking the
first of its kind in the world.
Jae Joon Lee, the CEO of Crescom, said, “We are delighted
to offer our advanced artificial intelligence solution to help dentists
determine the optimal timing for orthodontic treatment and bone age growth
examination."
